Arron “Scott” Fleming, Ph.D.

Dean, Business, Humanities, and Social Sciences

Arron “Scott” Fleming, PhD, CPA, CMA is currently the Dean of Business, Humanities, and Social Sciences for the West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Beckley campus), an accounting faculty member of the John Chambers College of Business and Economics at West Virginia University, and facilitates multiple projects across the WVU system, including the involvement of higher education within the annual Locked Shields cybersecurity event.  He served formerly as an associate professor of accounting, the chair of the Accounting Department (2012-2015) in the John Chambers College of Business and Economics at West Virginia University, the Senior Director for the Center for Executive Education (2018-2022), he served as the Interim Executive Director of the anti-fraud think tank The Institute for Fraud Prevention (2017-2018), he served as president of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the American Accounting Association (2016-2017), and he has served multiple times as the president of the West Virginia Council of Accounting Educators.

He has taught undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses in a number of areas, including managerial accounting, audit, financial accounting, accounting information systems, forensic accounting, and behavioral research courses.

Dr. Fleming’s research interest is in behavioral aspects of organizations, spanning that of accounting, finance, and management, with a particular focus on fraud, forensics, and ethics, and he has various publications and national awards in these areas.  
   
He currently serves on the board of directors for the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and as a co-guest editor for The Journal of Forensic Accounting Research for a special issue in whistle blowing.

Dr. Fleming graduated in 1988 from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Accounting major), in 1996 from West Virginia University with an MBA, and in 2005 from Virginia Tech with a Ph.D. in Accounting.

Prior to academia, Dr. Fleming worked as a financial and cost accountant, accounting manager, controller, treasurer, chief financial officer, and internal auditor, in both domestic and foreign assignments, in broad ranging industries including aluminum production, plastics, financial, and industrial products manufacturing and distribution.  Aspects of his corporate background include strategy and operations, and financial and compliance oversight.
